TEACHING
Ian has been teaching singing for more than 30 years and has taught
in a variety of settings including The North East of Scotland Music
School, Aberdeen University, St Andrews University, Northern College
of Education and Aberdeen College. At Aberdeen College he taught a course
on the Teaching of Singing covering history, repertoire, techniques
of teaching and performance practice. He has given workshops and master
classes throughout the country and has coached ensembles and choirs
in both technique and interpretation
He has taught all voices, ages and standards and is especially keen
on teaching 'remedials' - people who would love to sing but think they
are 'tone deaf' usually caused by being told in Primary School to stand
in the back row, open and shut their mouths but not to make a noise!
Repertoire is his particular strong point and he thinks that every student
should tackle a wide range of styles and periods - and ban The 24 Italian
Songs and Arias - there is so much music available that it should be
possible to find repertoire to challenge and extend. At the moment all
his teaching is at the Music
Centre of St Andrews University, contact the Music Centre (music@st-andrews.ac.uk
or phone on 01334 462226) for details
